We were in the car (well, minivan since we've passed the able to fit into a single car phase of our family life) tonight going to Wal-Mart (of course) and Jace shared some of his wisdom with us. He said "I know what my finger knees are called." We were in the front mostly listening to him as we also assured Sophie who was apparently incredibly shirsty and hungry (since she told us approximately 100 times on the way home) that she could last the 3 more minutes it would take to get home before she needed to eat. I had to make sure that I heard him right so I said "your finger knees?" He said yeah, my knuckles. So as we were cracking up about that one and I was realizing that knuckles are sort of knee-like in an only Jace would come up with that way, he said "but I have no idea what the shoulders of my legs are called." (Hips, in case you were momentarily confused.) So after our anatomy lesson for the night, I made a mental note to work harder with Sophie and Maddie Rose on body parts.
This story reminded us of another classic Jace moment (as well as a funny Sophie story) so while I'm here typing I'll go ahead and share them with you.
Jace classic number 2: In the car (minivan) again, probably on the way to school, Jace started asking about people's names. He went through the mommy and daddy are named Katherine and Sheldon and wanted to know Nana's real name (Nancy) and Papa's real name (Al -which he declared is a funny name) and Mimi's name (Sarah). Then he said "Do we even know Mary and Jim's real names?" Mary is my sister and Jim is her husband although we're too lazy to call them Aunt Mary and Uncle Jim so the kids just call them Mary and Jim as well. Apparently he thought it was some kind of code...or maybe they are secret agents?
Sophie's funny moment happened a couple of months ago, so it was probably not long after she turned two. She was walking across the living room and stopped with a surprised look on her face. Then she said "OH! I sneezed out of my bottom!" I couldn't stop laughing and had to call Sheldon and share her insight with him. Built in entertainment is my reward for staying at home these days. She is a funny, funny child and Jace is definitely a thinker who will change the world if he channels his thought process in the right way. Emma has had her share of funny things but at 8 she's mostly past the funny comment stage and on to amazing us with her sweet spirit and generosity. It is too soon to tell what personality Maddie Rose will have (although she's pretty sweet right now, so we can hope) but we know that we are blessed beyond belief and feel honored to share our lives with these four amazing little people that sometimes frustrate us but also bring us incredible joy.
